1885-S Morgan, MS65 Deep Mirror Prooflike
Stunning Registry Coin
One of Two DMPL Coins at PCGS

1885-S $1 MS65 Deep Mirror Prooflike PCGS. The 1885-S is seen much less often in Gem condition than the typical common date, but it is still readily collectible through MS65 with some patience, and collectors can often be selective when picked a coin from several available. However, this is only true for non-Prooflike coins. The 1885-S is notably scarce in Prooflike grades, and it is shockingly rare in Deep Mirror Prooflike. PCGS reports only two Deep Mirror Prooflike pieces, both in MS65 (one of which is offered here); NGC lists 10 Deep Prooflike coins, the finest of which grade MS64 (8/25).

In The Morgan and Peace Dollar Textbook, Wayne Miller wrote:

"The 1885-S, when prooflike, is frequently so on one side only, usually the reverse. Such pieces will display exceptionally deep mirror fields and frosty devices on the reverse, without a trace of prooflike surface on the obverse. Many lustrous and semi-prooflike pieces are sold as prooflikes. A gem prooflike specimen is worth a substantial premium.

"In 1977 a small hoard of superb cameo prooflikes entered the market through auction and private sale of the collection of R.D. Donovan. These incredible pieces still reappear in the market at justifiably enormous premiums."

We have previously handled several of the NGC Deep Prooflike pieces in MS64, but we have never handled a PCGS example. To our knowledge, no PCGS Deep Mirror Prooflike piece has previously appeared at public auction. The current coin is, most assuredly, an incredible opportunity for the advanced Registry collector. Thoroughly brilliant fields glimmer with watery mirroring on both sides, while the boldly struck central devices yield pristine frost overall and appreciable cameo contrast. A few tiny marks are not bothersome, with the coin displaying generally remarkable eye appeal for the grade. A top-tier coin of unsurpassable quality for the 1885-S Deep Mirror Prooflike category. Population: 2 in 65 Deep Mirror Prooflike, 0 finer (8/25).(Registry values: P5, N4719)
