Description

1886-O Silver Dollar, MS64
Prohibitively Rare Any Finer

1886-O $1 MS64 PCGS. Although the mintage exceeds 10.7 million pieces, the 1886-O is scarce in Choice Mint State and prohibitively rare at the Gem Uncirculated level. For all practical purposes, MS64 is the finest grade most collectors will encounter (much less afford). While no verified reason exists for why the '86-O is so rare in high grades, the Pittman Act meltings remain the most likely possibility. This near-Gem example will fit nicely into any advanced Morgan dollar collection. Brilliant and frosty, the coin is sharply struck for this scarce New Orleans issue. Cartwheel mint luster illuminates nearly mark-free fields and Liberty's cheek shows only a few superficial luster grazes. PCGS reports only seven numerically finer examples plus 29 pieces in 64+ (2/25).(Registry values: P8, N4719)
