    Description

    1886-S Dollar, MS66+
    A CAC-Endorsed Condition Rarity

1886-S $1 MS66+ PCGS. CAC. Ex: JCS Collection. The 1886-S is even scarcer than the '85-S in high grade. This is partially due to its mintage of only 750,000 coins, which is roughly half of the production from 1885 at San Francisco. In A Guide Book of Morgan Silver Dollars, fifth edition, Q. David Bowers notes that most of this issue remained in government storage well into the 20th century. Despite scarcity, little numismatic market existed this date prior to the 1960s. In the 1940s and 1950s, bags of the date were available, but Bowers notes that many just went to casinos. The end result for collectors today is that the 1886-S is rare in Premium Gem condition and exceptionally so finer.

This piece displays dazzling cartwheel luster whose preservation lives up to all expectations for the MS66+ grade. Central sharpness is outstanding, and neither side has even a hint of toning. Few 1886-S dollars are comparably strong Registry Set candidates. Population: 52 in 66 (8 in 66+), 5 finer. CAC: 17 in 66, 2 finer (7/19).
