Description

Scarce Prooflike 1887/6 Dollar, MS66

1887/6 $1 MS66 Prooflike PCGS. Prooflike examples are very scarce of this overdate issue. The reason, of course, has to do with the nature of what makes a coin prooflike in the first place. The raised portion (fields) of the dies are polished in the Mint. This polishing oftentimes weakens or even eliminates certain fine details in the dies. The underdigit on both the P and O-mint overdates of this year are fragile to begin with. If the dies had been polished too vigorously the underdigit would have disappeared altogether. On this piece, the curve of the 6 is slightly weakened but still apparent on both sides of the 7. Brilliant and well struck with only faint traces of mint frost evident on the devices. Population: 2 in 66, 0 finer (1/02).
