Incredible 1887-O Dollar, MS66 Prooflike
One of the Finest Known

1887-O $1 MS66 Prooflike PCGS. Ex: R. Dier Collection. Slight strike weakness, typical for the issue, is noted in the centers, although this specimen is actually far above average in terms of detail definition. This minor concern is easily redeemed by the stunning surface preservation and eye appeal of the current offering. No 1887-O dollar has been graded finer at either NGC or PCGS as of (11/08). Regardless of surface designation, only 16 pieces are graded at the MS66 level, and only four of those examples are designated as Prooflike at both services combined--two at PCGS and two and NGC. One must also consider the possibility that those low numbers include one or two resubmissions.
Based on the distribution of certified 1887-O dollars, it is clear that this issue was poorly handled after striking. Most suffer from bagmarks and those that were not saved in original bags were circulated. Per Bowers (2007): "Bags were released over a long period of years, including 1938, 1953, and 1957, per interviews I have conducted, and no doubt on other occasions as well. Examples from Treasury releases of 1962 through 1964 constitute the majority of pieces available in Mint State today. Bags were released as late as March 1964." Obviously this example was either well positioned within a bag, or saved at the time of release in 1887 or shortly thereafter. The cheek is exceptionally clean and only a few light abrasions in the left obverse field preclude a finer technical grade.
