    Description

Rarely Seen MS 66 1887-S Dollar

1887-S $1 MS 66 PCGS. It seems that a sizeable number of 1887-S dollars were released into circulation shortly after striking. The remainder of the mintage stayed in storage in the mint until the early 1940s, at which time they began to be paid out at face value. As a result, auction results were impressively high for this issue in the early years of the 20th century. Bowers relates that an Uncirculated '87-S was sold at auction for $12.50 in 1914. Like many of the other S-mint issues from the mid and late 1880s, the 1887-S is plentiful in the lower grades of Uncirculated, but very rare in Gem and better grades. In fact, only 12 pieces have been so graded by PCGS with none finer (3/01).
The surfaces are bright, frosted, and free from any trace of toning. Fully struck throughout, there are no abrasions worthy of individual mention. Population: 12 in 66, 0 finer (3/01).
    From the Gary Wolkwitz Collection.
