1889-CC Morgan Dollar, AU58 Prooflike
Limited Mintage, Heavily Melted Issue
1889-CC $1 AU58 Prooflike NGC. After four years of
inactivity the Carson City Mint renewed coining operations in
October 1889, though production was limited to silver dollars and
double eagles. Both issues claim typically low mintages for the
facility, but the 350,000 dollars initially struck was reduced to
somewhere between 25,000 and 100,000 coins after a majority of the
mintage was melted for reasons that remain unknown, according to
Rusty Goe. With such a small quantity of survivors available to the
vast number of Morgan dollar specialists, the 1889-CC is
understandably one of the major keys to the series. It is also a
conditionally challenging issue, seldom available in near-Mint
condition. This is a highly attractive AU58 with flashy Prooflike
fields on each side. The surfaces are lightly toned and both
obverse and reverse are peppered with numerous small
abrasions.(Registry values: P9, N2998)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 2559, PCGS# 7191, Greysheet# 7555)
