Description

Popular 1889-CC Dollar, MS61

1889-CC $1 MS61 NGC. The 1889-CC dollar was struck only in the last three months of the year. The Carson City Mint had reopened from a four-year closure in July, and the dies and planchets needed for production apparently were not ready for another two to three months after that. The issue is known popularly as a rarity, though finding an attractive example for one's chosen grade is the real challenge. This MS61 piece, well-defined with pale silver luster and a few spots of deeper toning, has a mostly clean cheek, and the rest of the devices are minimally marked. The fields show the wispy abrasions which account for the grade, as well as a faint fingerprint behind Liberty's head.(Registry values: P9, N4719)
