1889-CC Silver Dollar, MS62
Elusive Mint State Example

1889-CC $1 MS62 NGC. Coinage operations were reinstated in 1889 at the Carson City Mint after a three-year lull, but it was October before any silver dollars were struck. Equipment repairs, maintenance, and hiring new mint personnel delayed start-up, and the Nevada Mint's output for the year was just 350,000 Morgan dollars and 30,945 double eagles. Most of the mintage circulated to some extent -- as a result, the 1889-CC was represented by just a single coin in the GSA sales.

This is a sharply defined MS62 example, with smoothly frosted surfaces and a minimum of abrasions or bagmarks for the grade. A faint sheen of golden-gray toning mellows the brilliant-silver surfaces, with bold cartwheel luster shining through the light patina on both sides. A thin abrasion above star 2 is the most noticeable mark, but it is minor for the assigned grade level. With most Uncirculated 1889-CC dollars in the MS61 to MS63 range, this coin fits well at the upper end of those examples, and finer coins are rare.
