Description
1889-CC Morgan, MS62, Rarest CC-Mint Dollar
1889-CC $1 MS62 NGC. After being closed for four years, the Carson City Mint reopened on July 1, 1889. The facility required extensive repairs after its long period of inactivity, and coinage did not resume until October. This circumstance resulted in a low mintage of 350,000 silver dollars. Judging from the small number of circulated coins known today, few of those silver dollars were released at the time. In later years, the majority of the mintage was stored at the San Francisco Mint and in bank vaults throughout the West. Natural attrition and the well-known silver melts of later years drastically reduced the already small supply of the coins. Few 1889-CCs were distributed through the great Treasury releases in Washington. David Bowers relates that when the government decided to hold back Carson City dollars in 1964 to prepare for the GSA sales, only one 1889-CC dollar could be found in the Treasury vaults. Today the issue is acknowledged as the rarest Carson City silver dollar by a wide margin. The present example boasts splendid cartwheel luster on both sides, with silvery centers accenting a ring of gold at the rims. A few stray contact marks on the cheek and the obverse fields account for the grade, but in terms of strike, rarity, and overall eye appeal, this piece has much to commend itself.(Registry values: P9, N4719)
