Description
Rare 1889-CC Morgan Dollar
MS63 Deep Mirror Prooflike
1889-CC $1 MS63 Deep Mirror Prooflike PCGS. The 1889-CC
Morgan dollar is the CC-mint key par excellence among the
series issues, far and away the most desired and much more elusive
than its second- and third-place cousins, the 1879-CC and 1893-CC,
respectively. The Carson City Mint struck 350,000 1889-CC dollars
after reopening in midyear from a four-year hiatus, and apparently
250,000 to 325,000 were eventually melted, per Rusty Goe in The
Mint on Carson Street. Fortunately, a considerable minority of
the survivors are found with deeply mirrored prooflike surfaces,
including the present Select Mint State specimen. This piece is
mostly untoned, save for a few flecks of color scattered about. The
devices are deeply frosted, setting up intense contrast with the
mirrored fields. The few contact marks found are grade-consistent
and away from the focal points. Population: 46 in 63 Deep Mirror
Prooflike, 15 finer (8/10).From The Helen Gates Kirk Collection.(Registry values: P9, N4719)
