Description
1889-CC Morgan Dollar, MS64
Simply Excellent Quality of Luster
1889-CC $1 MS64 PCGS. VAM-5. Ex: Desert Find. Frosty,
vibrant cartwheel luster characterizes each side of this near-Gem
example, yielding brilliant surfaces that beautifully complement
the exceptional sharpness of the strike. At first glance, this coin
appears as though it could grade finer, and a loupe is needed to
dissect light marks on Liberty's cheek that limit the PCGS opinion.
The fields on both sides are clean, and here we begin to see the
upper end of the quality present among the Desert Find dollars.
1889-CC Morgans in MS64 are scarce coins as a whole, and this piece
is strong for the grade. Having not yet been seen by CAC, that
quality is perhaps not as recognized as it could be on the
holder. The VAM-5 dies yield this coin's frosty surfaces and sharp strike, and the reverse peripheral cracks identify the familiar middle state of the dies among the Desert Find dollars. This is a coin that will delight many collectors of Carson City Morgan dollars.
Exactly what happened to the mintage of 350,000 silver dollars struck at Carson City, Nevada in 1889 is not entirely known, although educated reasoning suggests that many bags of this issue were likely among those coins melted after the 1918 Pittman Act was passed. Most of the surviving coins known today were distributed into circulation at the time of issue, and by the time the General Services Administration sorted through government stores of Morgan dollars in the 1960s and 1970s, only a single Mint State 1889-CC coin remained. The Desert Find, however, reveals a glimpse into what happened to a few of the Mint State 1889-CC dollars released into commercial channels that later disappeared. 35 coins -- apparently most of two original bank rolls -- were set aside in the 1950s or 1960s, likely for face value (as could still be done at the time in Nevada, where Morgan dollars circulated through casinos and banks). Little did the original curator know what value he was preserving for future generations, and what delight the re-discovery of his little group would bring for a new generation of numismatists. Population: 38 in 64 (2 in 64+), 3 finer (7/25).(Registry values: P9, N7079)
