Description
1889-CC Morgan Dollar, MS64+
Late Die State, Spectacular Luster
Near the Condition Census
1889-CC $1 MS64+ PCGS. VAM-5A. Ex: Desert Find. This piece
is just shy of the non-Prooflike 1889-CC Morgan Condition Census.
It is one of two MS64+ coins at PCGS, where just three are
numerically finer in the non-Prooflike category. NGC lists five
finer non-Prooflike coins (7/25). This is rare air for the 1889-CC.
Traditional channels of numismatic curatorship have yielded few
coins so well preserved, and in the 1970s, when the GSA sales
failed to produce additional pieces, the rarity of the 1889-CC in
high grade was established. The Desert Find coins will, invariably,
shift the landscape of high-end 1889-CC dollars, but perhaps only
momentarily. Demand for high-quality 1889-CC coins is so strong,
that these pieces will be widely absorbed into the market.
Moreover, even among the Desert Find coins, only a few achieved
MS64 grades from PCGS -- a reflection of this issue's overall
prevailing rarity at that level. The current piece is frosty, brilliant, and radiantly lustrous. A bold strike graces the devices, and there is not a singular distracting abrasion. Some faint grazes on the cheek and in the field adjacent serve to limit the grade assigned, but we have seen a number of Gem-graded Carson City coins of other dates with comparable quality and eye appeal. Considering only a handful of Gem 1889-CC dollars exist, this Desert Find dollar -- the highest technically graded among the group -- will find a firm position among the best that the 1889-CC dollar has to offer collectors. The cataloger is excited to see it at a later date, when it will perhaps carry CAC endorsement.
The VAM-5 dies are in their late state here, which is classified as VAM-5A. The date crack extends throughout all the numerals, and on the reverse, the crack through ONE now continues across the field and into DOLLAR, and tiny die chips appear along the crack at the O in ONE. Population: 38 in 64 (2 in 64+), 3 finer (7/25).(Registry values: P9, N7079)
