Perennially Popular 1889-CC Morgan Dollar--A Borderline Gem, Deep Mirror Prooflike Example

1889-CC $1 MS 64 Deep Mirror Prooflike PCGS. The ousting of the anti-silver Democrat Grover Cleveland from the White House in 1888 paved the way for the resumption of coinage operations at the Carson City Mint. In the following year, the silver dollar presses were reactivated after a three-year hiatus, and 350,000 coins were produced. Like the 1881-CC and 1885-CC, the 1889-CC did not see widespread circulation at the time of issue. As such, circulated coins are scarce and always in demand among Morgan dollar collectors. Whereas the two earlier issues are plentiful in Mint State, the 1889-CC is a premier rarity above the About Uncirculated grade level. This is probably a function of both the limited original mintage and extensive melting under the terms of the Pittman Act. Prooflike and Deep Mirror Prooflike coins account for approximately 50% of extant Mint State examples, but their aesthetic appeal assures strong bidder competition whenever a specimen appears at auction. A refreshingly smooth coin, the surfaces are free of individually mentionable abrasions. Both sides are boldly cameoed with crisply impressed devices. NGC and PCGS report only 22 coins at the present grade level, with none finer (7/00).
