Description
1889-O $1 Weak "E" Clash AU55 NGC. Weak "E" Clash, VAM-20A. A Hot 50 Variety. The 1889-O VAM-20A is one of the more difficult Hot 50 varieties to come by. Mark Kimpton in his Elite Clashed Morgan Dollars reference opines that the variety: "... couples intense interest with extreme rarity, making it one of the pricier clashed varieties around. Estimates place the premium on the AU grade at 25 X a 'common' value of an 1889-O Morgan!" A PCGS-graded AU55 sold for $1,495 (including Buyer's premium) in the Heritage October 25, 2008 Dallas sale. The clashed E to the upper left of the bow on this Choice AU specimen is quite strong. Magnification shows soft, barely discernible golden-tan patina on the obverse and both sides display a good amount of luster in the recessed areas. The design elements are well defined despite light high-point wear and neither side reveals marks other than what might be expected for a coin experiencing brief circulation. Census for VAM-20A: 1 in 55, 0 finer (2/10).
