Description
1891-O Morgan Dollar, MS66
O-Mint Condition Rarity
None Certified Finer
1891-O $1 MS66 PCGS. The New Orleans Mint struck a large
production of more than 7.9 million Morgan dollars in 1891. Mint
records indicate 30 obverse and 29 reverse dies were sent to the
New Orleans facility for use in the coinage, but relatively few die
varieties have been cataloged over the years. Q. David Bowers
notes:"The 1891-O dollar has the unique distinction of being the only issue in the Morgan series of which during the year specimens were struck under three different authorizations: the 1878 Bland-Allison Act, the 1890 Sherman Silver Purchase Act, and the 1891 Trade Dollar Recoinage Act. Although this fact has been nearly universally overlooked in texts describing the issue, I find it fascinating."
Unfortunately, the coins were not well-produced, with nearly all examples showing incomplete detail, due to improper die spacing. There was little commercial demand for silver dollars at the time, so much of the large mintage was held in government storage and released at sporadic intervals over the years. Large numbers were still available during the Treasury releases of 1962 to 1964. Accordingly, the 1891-O is an available issue in lower Uncirculated grades, but it becomes scarce at the MS65 grade level, and MS66 examples are prime condition rarities. Neither of the leading grading services has certified any examples finer than MS66 (11/25). The record price realized for the issue belongs to the MS66 PCGS specimen that brought $108,687.50 in a Legend auction in 2019.
The present coin is a spectacular Premium Gem that exhibits unusually sharp definition on most design elements, with just a touch of softness on the eagle's breast. The impeccably preserved brilliant surfaces radiate vibrant mint luster from both sides and overall eye appeal is terrific. As one of the finest-certified examples, this coin should find a home in the finest collection or Registry Set. This coin is pictured on PCGS CoinFacts. Population: 5 in 66, 0 finer (11/25).(Registry values: P7, N4719)
