Rare 1892 Morgan Dollar
MS65 Deep Mirror Prooflike

1892 $1 MS65 Deep Mirror Prooflike PCGS. The early to mid-1890s were the low point of Philadelphia Mint Morgan dollar production. After 1891's generous mintage of nearly 9 million coins, the 1892-P production struggled to exceed the 1-million mark (by 36,000 pieces, to be exact). 1893's total was 378,000 coins, and the following year saw the memorably low 110,00 pieces for the 1894-P. The 1895-P is, of course, a celebrated, storied proof-only issue.
Mint State 1892 Morgan dollars are scarce; Gems are rare, and Deep Mirror Prooflike pieces are far more elusive. This example offers brilliant, deeply mirrored fields. The usual hint of strike softness appears over the ear, but the only singular mark is a shallow, diagonal tick on Liberty's upper cheek. This piece is one of five Gem Deep Mirror Prooflike examples certified at PCGS, and there are none finer (8/09).(Registry values: P6, N4719)
