    1892-S $1 AU58 PCGS. CAC. Ex: STP Legacy Collection. The grade-price curve of the key-date 1892-S Morgan dollar spikes dramatically in the grades of AU50 and above; lower-grade pieces are quite common, but near-Mint State and truly Uncirculated pieces are elusive and see huge demand from the hordes of series fans. The present example likely traded as Mint State prior to the advent of third-party grading and certification. The devices show a hint of rub on the obverse high points and a mere touch of clouding of the otherwise intact luster. The frosty silver-gray surfaces are distraction-free, highly lustrous, and possess undeniable eye appeal. The CAC green approval sticker present here is an important addition here: Although the two leading services combined have seen in excess of 200 submissions in AU58, only seven of those bear the CAC sticker. The last such PCGS example we offered, as lot 5676 in our Central States Signature (Heritage, 4/2012), brought $16,100.
