    Description

    1892-S Dollar, AU58
    Major Rarity in High Grades

1892-S $1 AU58 PCGS. Virtually the entire 1.2 million-coin mintage was employed commercially on the West Coast during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Only a handful of 1892-S Morgan dollars were set aside for numismatic purposes, while the rest were left to serve their intended purpose in everyday transactions. Most coins are found in heavily circulated condition, and the average certified survivor is in XF40. The population totals begin a rapid decline above XF45, and PCGS reports just 60 Mint State grading events finer than this lovely borderline-Uncirculated example -- a total that is likely inflated by resubmissions (6/15).

Deep silver-gray patina dominates each side, accented by colorful amber-gold, cobalt-blue, and sea-green elements in the protected regions. Well-struck with the faintest trace of central softness, this near-Mint dollar shows just a few scattered ticks over surprisingly lustrous surfaces.(Registry values: P8, N1793) (NGC ID# 255P, PCGS# 7218)
