    1893-CC Silver Dollar, MS64
    The End of an Era

    1893-CC $1 MS64 PCGS. The Carson City Mint shut down their coinage presses in 1893 after producing 769,402 coins with a face value of $1,485,040. The total included 677,000 Morgan dollars, 60,000 half eagles, 14,000 eagles, and 18,402 double eagles. The same year that this coin was minted, Augustus G. Heaton published A Treatise on the Coinage of the United States Branch Mints:

    "As the new mint at Philadelphia will have a capacity equal to all existing United States Mints, it is probable that others will be greatly restricted or even abolished in no long time, and that mint marks will not only cease as an annual expense, but be a treasure in time to those who have the foresight to collect them now."



    Heaton's words were prophetic, as the Carson City Mint ceased coinage operations in June 1893 with the silver dollar production. Charlotte and Dahlonega had closed at the beginning of the Civil War, and New Orleans would halt production just 16 years after Heaton's work was published.

    This Choice Mint State example is an extraordinary representative of the final Carson City coinage, featuring brilliant silver surfaces, excellent design definition, trivial grade-consistent marks, and satin luster. PCGS has only certified 15 numerically finer examples of this issue (3/19).(Registry values: P8, N2998)
