Description
1893-CC Silver Dollar, Frosty MS65
A Major Rarity This Fine
1893-CC $1 MS65 PCGS. The Carson City Mint ceased coinage
operations in 1893, but not before 677,000 Morgan dollars were
struck. This was among the larger mintages from the Nevada branch
mint and did not prompt immediately numismatic attention. Even
workers in the Carson City Mint may not have known that it would be
the final silver struck there. Years earlier, the Carson City
facility had been ordered to cease coinage operations in 1885 under
the first Grover Cleveland administration, which held an
anti-silver policy stance that affected the coinage operations
between Carson City and the Comstock Lode. But coinage had resumed
in 1889, under the Benjamin Harrison administration. The 1893
suspension was again under a Cleveland administration. However, the
second time, operations did not commence in 1897 or 1898.The 1893-CC silver dollar coinage partly went into circulation, but large quantities were likely retained in Mint vaults. After 1918, the Pittman Act melts destroyed millions of silver dollars in storage, likely accounting for much of the 1893-CC coin's demise. By the time of the GSA sales of the 1970s, only a single 1893-CC dollar remained in government control. As a result, the date is seldom seen in high grade.
Gem examples of this issue are rarest. PCGS and NGC combined report only 26 pieces in MS65 or MS65+, across all contrast categories, with a single MS66 coin finer at each service (12/25). This Gem PCGS coin displays an unusually sharp strike, with frosty mint luster that has just a hint of light golden color. A few stray marks on the obverse, such as on Liberty's nose, are all that deny an even finer grade. PCGS Population: 17 in 65 (3 in 65+), 1 finer (12/25).(Registry values: P8, N7079)
