Description

1893-O Morgan Dollar, MS65
CAC-Approved in a Green Label Holder
Exceptional Strike and Eye Appeal

1893-O $1 MS65 PCGS. CAC. Presented here is a beautiful Condition Census example of the 1893-O Morgan dollar, housed in a generation 3.1 green label PCGS holder, and endorsed by CAC in the irrefutable MS65 grade. This is a true Gem coin, endowed with vibrant cartwheel luster that glistens like frost over the devices and appears as a satiny plain in the fields where it provides subtle reflectivity. The strike on the hair over Liberty's ear and on the eagle's talons and breast feathers surpasses norms for the issue, as does the sharpness on the lower portion of the reverse wreath. Indeed, while it is not fully struck, this piece is one of the best struck and most eye-appealing 1893-O Morgan dollars we have seen in Gem or better grades, including Prooflike, Deep Mirror Prooflike, and non-Prooflike pieces. Among CAC-approved pieces we have seen or traced, this coin further stands out for its exceptional eye appeal and bold strike.
The faintest of luster grazes are noted, although the overall preservation exceeds expectations for an ordinary example in this grade, compounding the eye appeal. Save for tinges of amber around the outer borders, the coin is brilliant -- as close to an "as struck" specimen as we have seen.
The 1893-O receives less heraldry than the San Francisco issue of this year, though in Gem or better grades the New Orleans coin is a major series condition key. Rarely does an example as fine as MS65 or better appear at auction. We have handled such a piece on only 11 prior occasions, but six of those offerings represented two coins making multiple appearances between 2001 and 2004. During the last two decades, we have handled only four distinct Gem or better 1893-O dollars, in a total of five auction appearances.
Combined, PCGS and NGC list only 14 1893-O Morgan dollars in MS65 or finer across all grade categories of Prooflike, Deep Mirror Prooflike, and non-Prooflike. However, some duplication may exist even in this small number, as we have only been able to concretely document eight Gem or better coins through public appearances thus far. The present coin is making what we believe to be its debut auction appearance, despite being one of the earliest -- if not the earliest -- pieces to be certified at the Gem level. Considered a Condition Census coin since the mid-1990s and reaffirmed in that standing by CAC, it represents an essential opportunity for the Registry collector and one worthy of pulling out all the stops for. Such exceptional examples of the 1893-O dollar come available perhaps once in a lifetime.
