Description
Important AU50 1893-S Dollar
1893-S $1 AU50 NGC. The 1893-S Morgan is not only the lowest-mintage circulation strike issue in the series--assuming one discounts the 12,000 alleged business strikes of the 1895-P that never surfaced--but it is also the lowest-mintage S-mint, with an emission of 100,000 coins. That production figure is not far behind the 1894-P, with 110,000 pieces made, but the S mintmark on the 1893-S lends it extra cachet, a bit of Old West panache added to an already-attractive issue. All 100,000 coins appear to have been made from a single obverse die, one that shows a couple of tiny but conclusive diagnostics. Bill Fivaz's Counterfeit Detection Guide describes them this way:"The conclusive diagnostic ... is a small (raised) die scratch running diagonally upward from the top left side of the vertical portion of the 'T' in LIBERTY. There are also two raised 'rabbit ear' die marks in the lower left foot of the 'R' in LIBERTY."
This is an appealing AU50 representative with wear largely confined to the high points, leaving considerable luster in mildly reflective fields which shine beneath layers of silver-gray, gold, and tan toning. Aside from a short line of reed marks on the chin and a handful of miscellaneous abrasions, the devices are largely clean.(Registry values: P10, N4719)
