    Almost Uncirculated 1893-S Dollar
    Significant Luster Surrounds the Devices

1893-S $1 AU50 NGC. The 1893-S has a mintage of 100,000 coins. In Silver Dollars and Trade Dollars of the United States, David Bowers mentions that tens of thousands of 1893-S dollars may have been melted under terms of the 1918 Pittman Act (in which more than 259 million silver dollars were melted for resale to England at $1 per fine ounce). Bowers estimates that between 4,000 and 8,000 '93-S dollars are extant in the grade range from VF20 to AU58. This AU50 example has bright silver-gray surfaces with touches of light olive toning, and significant mint luster remains in some of the protected areas. The design elements are nicely defined, though touches of weakness show in the hair above Liberty's ear, and on the eagle's breast and leg feathers. A few small abrasions are evident, particularly on Liberty's face. This desirable key date coin will make a fine addition to a high-grade circulated collection of Morgan dollars.
