Description

1893-S Morgan Dollar, AU50
Well-Preserved Key Date

1893-S $1 AU50 PCGS. VAM-1. The 1893-S is the rarest Morgan in the series in Mint State, boasting the lowest mintage of any circulation strike at only 100,000 coins. The entirety of the mintage was struck in January of 1893, as the Panic of 1893 began in May and the Sherman Silver Purchase Act was repealed in October, suspending further production for the year. The small issue saw heavy circulation throughout the West and survives with a mere 39 Mint State examples at PCGS; most pieces fall between VG and VF (4/26).
This About Uncirculated 1893-S is attractive, showing mostly brilliant surfaces layered in shimmering champagne luster. The protected areas of the fields flash glimpses of semireflectivity, particularly on the reverse. The devices are well-struck and display only light blending on the high points from brief circulation. Marks are trivial and Liberty and the eagle are remarkably void of noticeable abrasions. Some hairlines accompany the minimal wear that accounts for the grade designation. The 1893-S is listed among the 100 Greatest U.S. Coins (#41 in 6th edition).
