Description
1893-S Morgan Dollar, AU53
A High Grade for This Series Key
1893-S $1 AU53 NGC. The 1893-S remains a major rarity in any
grade from a 100,000-piece mintage that likely saw many examples
melted under the terms of the 1918 Pittman Act. An estimated 12,000
gradable examples survive across the certifiable spectrum, of which
perhaps 100 or so Mint State pieces exist today. Any certified
Uncirculated example that exists today is a six-figure coin, making
the About Uncirculated level the "sweet spot" for many collectors.
This AU53 example offers lightly toned golden-gray surfaces that
retain glints of silver luster throughout the partially reflective
obverse and reverse fields. Faint tufts of reddish-gold toning
exist at the margins. As expected at this grade, light abrasions
exist including an unobtrusive dash-like mark below Liberty's chin.
Eye appeal remains strong. The 1893-S is among the 100 Greatest
U.S. Coins, ranking #41 in the 6th edition of Jeff Garrett's
reference. NGC Census: 59 in 53 (1 in 53+), 81 finer
(12/25).(Registry values: P10, N4719)From The Zeus Collection.
