Description

    1893-S Dollar, AU55
    Brilliant With Significant Remaining Luster

1893-S $1 AU55 PCGS. The 1893-S Morgan dollar is the single most desirable issue in the series save for the 1895 Philadelphia proof -- a special case in numismatics if ever there was one. Bowers writes in the Silver Dollar Encyclopedia:

"In terms of all grades combined, the Proof-only 1895 Philadelphia dollar is rarer, as only 880 Proofs were struck. However, in higher grade levels there are more 1895 dollars in existence in Proof-60 or better grade than there are 1893-S dollars in MS-60 or better preservation. That the 1893-S is not an 'impossible' rarity is because thousands of worn specimens survive. I recall being offered a group of over 250 circulated pieces in 1987, the average grade being Very Fine."

This is an all-brilliant example that is well-defined on each side, and shows just a bit of high-point friction. Noticeable traces of mint luster remain around the devices and there are no singular abrasions. Sure to be of interest to many advanced dollar collectors. Population: 32 in 55, 47 finer (3/14).
