    1893-S Morgan Dollar, Lightly Toned MS60
    Important Uncirculated Capstone of the Series

    1893-S $1 MS60 PCGS. The present piece occupies an interesting position among the numerous illustrious issues in the Morgan dollar series, as one of the lowest-graded possible examples of the famous 1893-S -- certified in Mint State by PCGS. MS60, to be precise. If one were to form a mental image of what such a coin might look like, one might guess that it had lackluster surfaces pretty much devoid of eye appeal, showing no high-point rub but an abundance of scattered contact marks, including some quite serious.
    Nothing could be further from the truth where this coin is concerned.
    It is true that the surfaces expectedly show a few marks which we will note, but they are scattered and minor throughout both sides. The strike is quite well-executed overall, and the eye appeal is excellent. Starting with the focal points of the coin, Liberty's cheek shows a few faint, straight slide marks on the lower chin area, and a small scrape shows running diagonally through the ear. A few other tiny ticks in the obverse field are barely worthy of notice. The reverse is also relatively unabraded, the most obvious signs of contact being a small patch of reeding marks in the triangular area between the right (facing) olive branch, the arrows, and the right wing. The eagle's breast is free of mentionable abrasions.
    The coloration on both sides is a consistent olive-gold color with hints of rose, a captivating appearance that further enhances the surfaces. The luster is perhaps a bit subdued, but it would not surprise us to see this same coin again one day in a higher-grade holder. The importance of this offering, a Mint State 1893-S Morgan dollar, will surely not go unnoticed among the legions of collectors attempting to assemble complete sets.
