Description

Pleasing 1893-S Dollar, XF40

1893-S $1 XF40 NGC. Many numismatists consider the 1893-S to be the most desirable single Morgan dollar issue struck at a branch mint. In addition to its minuscule mintage (100,000 pieces), tens of thousands may have been melted under provisions of the 1918 Pittman Act (David Bowers, 2006). Traces of luster cling to the design elements of this light gray XF40 example, and aside from wear on the highpoints, these display nice detail. There are fewer marks than what might be expected for the grade. All in all, a pleasing, original key-date specimen.
