1894 Dollar, Condition Rarity MS65
Colorfully Toned Reverse
1894 $1 MS65 PCGS. The 1894 dollar saw just 110,000 pieces
struck, the smallest circulation-strike figure in the Morgan dollar
series except for the 1893-S. Examples are elusive in all grades,
and Mint State pieces are mostly in the lower ranges through MS63.
Near-Gems are scarce and Gems are condition rarities. PCGS and NGC
have graded fewer than 25 MS65s and only four specimens finer. The obverse of this amazing Gem example displays creamy-white centers and a touch of orange-gold peripheral color. The reverse is more deeply and extensively patinated with similar golden shades edged with cobalt-blue and lavender on the left side. The design elements are well-struck, including a fair amount of detail in the hair over Liberty's ear. A few trivial blemishes can be seen on and to the left of Liberty's neck and on her chin, both minimally distracting locations. All in all, this is one of the nicest 1894 Morgans that we have ever offered, and is sure to wind up as a centerpiece of a carefully assembled collection of this popular series. Population: 20 in 65, 4 finer (10/13).
