Description
Desirable 1894 Morgan Dollar, MS66
Tied for Finest Certified
1894 $1 MS66 PCGS. CAC. The model for the Morgan dollar, Ms.
Anna Williams, was apparently unaffected by the celebrity status
bestowed upon her by the hundreds of millions of silver dollars
that showed her profile. The following commentary was included in
her obituary in The Numismatist in 1926: "The story of how
Miss Williams came to be the model has not been told often. She was
besieged for the story many times, but in later years she smilingly
referred to it as 'an incident of my youth,' and preferred to talk
of her work in the kindergarten schools of the city (Philadelphia)
which she supervised."The portrait of Ms. Williams is the critical area for grading Mint State Morgan dollars. It is seldom found unblemished with a smooth, rounded cheek. This is especially true for the 1894, the second scarcest Philadelphia issue in the series. Several bags and numerous rolls were released in the 1950s and 1960s, but most of these coins were lower graded examples in the MS60-64 range. To date, only three other examples of the 1894 have been certified in MS66 condition (all four are PCGS), and predictably none are finer.
As mentioned, the portrait of Liberty is remarkably smooth and free from the abrasions normally encountered. The surfaces are smooth, satiny, and brilliant throughout. Each side is fully struck with fine detailing over the ear of Liberty as well as the breast of the eagle. A rare opportunity for the Morgan specialist. Population: 4 in 66, 0 finer (10/08).
