Description

PCGS 1895-S MS 67 Deep Mirror Prooflike. A simply amazing coin that will, no doubt, cause a few Morgan dollar specialists to do a double take upon receiving their catalogs. The glittering white surfaces are almost peerless in their lack of noticeable contact marks and the overall appearance of the coin reminds one of an 1879-S or 1880-S with the strength and frostiness of the devices. The chief source of uncirculated 1895-S dollars, the Redfield hoard, contained a small number of prooflike examples, but these are invariably heavily bagmarked. Even non-prooflikes are rarely encountered in grades finer than MS 64. The population of both prooflike and deep mirror prooflike specimens at PCGS and NGC combined totals just 6 pieces in MS 65 and higher, with the closest DMPL example being an NGC MS 65. As of January, this is the finest deep mirror prooflike certified by PCGS by a wide margin of three points and stands alone as the finest overall 1895-S, including non-prooflikes.
