Exceptional 1896-O Select Dollar

1896-O $1 MS63 PCGS. Ex: Larry Shapiro Collection. Many numismatists contend that the typical 1896-O dollar comes with considerable problems. Wayne Miller, for example, in his Morgan and Peace dollar reference, says: " No other Morgan dollar is as consistently deficient in luster, strike, and degree of surface abrasions as the 1896-O." The Select coin in this lot digresses significantly from Miller's profile. Its untoned surfaces are fully lustrous, and exhibit sharp definition on most of the design elements. The hair over Liberty's ear is weak, but fairly good detail is apparent on the eagle's breast. The reverse is quite well preserved, while a few marks on Liberty's cheek and neck preclude a higher grade. All in all, a nice example for the issue and the grade.
