    1896-S Morgan Dollar, MS64+
    Scarce Any Finer

1896-S $1 MS64+ PCGS. CAC. VAM-2, Repunched 6. No large quantity of 1896-S dollars emerged from the Treasury vaults, and aside from a few hundred coins rescued from the Redfield hoard, no trace of the greater part of the 5 million-piece mintage remains. Melting under the terms of the Pittman Act is suspected. Gem or finer coins are notably scarce (and expensive). This high-end near-Gem example is well-struck and well-preserved, with mottled blue and peach-gold toning on the obverse and a trace of reddish-gold border toning on the reverse. The 6 in the date is repunched -- the primary marker for VAM-2 -- and the mintmark shows minor doubling.(Registry values: P7, N1793)
