Description

1896-S Morgan Dollar, MS66
Condition Census Registry Coin
Brilliant and Lustrous

1896-S $1 MS66 PCGS. The 1896-S silver dollar mintage was a respectable 5 million pieces, and examples up through the Very Fine grades can be obtained without difficulty. The issue is surprisingly scarce in Mint State, and becomes a major conditional rarity at the MS66 level. According to Q. David Bowers, "Bags of 1896-S Uncirculated dollars were paid out from the San Francisco Mint during the very early 1950's, when scant attention was paid to them as they had little value at the time." As a result, these Mint State coins, heavily bagmarked, evaded the hands of collectors to preserve them. Merely a handful have survived in high grade today. PCGS has certified only six pieces in MS66, with two finer; NGC has certified just four coins as MS66, and one finer (12/25).

This high-grade representative shows slight incompleteness of strike on the hair above the ear, but the essentially brilliant surfaces are very lustrous and remarkably free from contact. The coin has very attractive eye appeal. A small roundish strike-through near the P in PLURIBUS provides an identifier. This is a great opportunity to acquire an important conditional rarity in the Morgan dollar series, and an excellent example of that issue as a whole. PCGS Population: 6 in 66, 2 finer (12/25).
