Description
Remarkable 1897-S Morgan Dollar
1897-S $1 MS67 ★ NGC. Beginning with distributions from the San Francisco Mint in the 1920s, the 1897-S has been treated as a common date in the Morgan Dollar series. This is an assessment that still holds true today, but only for coins in circulated and lower Mint State grades. Survivors that grade as high as MS67 number only 31 pieces at the major grading services, and there are just two examples finer (1/05). Both sides present as untoned with reflective glimmers in the fields. Every last feature is sharply struck, and they are free of readily evident abrasions with luster that provides a semi-prooflike sheen as the coin turns under the light. This is the finest example thus far certified at NGC with the coveted ★ designation. From The Banks Collection.(#7250) (Registry values: P4, N2998)
