Stunning 1897-S Morgan Dollar
Tied for Finest Certified
MS67 Prooflike

1897-S $1 MS67 Prooflike PCGS. The initial mintage of 1897-S silver dollars was a substantial 5.8 million pieces. Many Mint State examples survive today, and Q. David Bowers believes this date is the most available Prooflike San Francisco Mint silver dollar dated later than 1882. The Redfield Hoard reportedly contained more than 1,000 pieces of this date in the Prooflike category.
While Prooflike specimens of this date are not rare in general, the great majority of these coins are in lower Mint State grades. At the exalted Superb Gem level, Prooflike specimens are very rare indeed. Currently, NGC has certified only two examples in this grade and category, with PCGS also reporting only two specimens in MS67 PL (11/08).
The present example is a delightful combination of high technical quality and stunning eye appeal. The deeply reflective fields contrast vividly with the strongly impressed devices to produce a near-Cameo effect. The surfaces are untoned and brilliant, with no detectable distractions. The present coin has few equals, and represents an important opportunity for the high-grade Morgan dollar specialist.
