Superlative 1897-S Morgan Dollar, MS68

1897-S $1 MS68 PCGS. CAC. Ex: Jack Lee 2. Unlike the preceding few years, the mintage of silver dollars in San Francisco during the 12 months of 1897 was substantial, and at the end of the year that facility had coined nearly 6 million pieces. Dave Bowers writes in A Guidebook of Morgan Silver Dollars: "Here we are, back to a really top-notch dollar in terms of availability, strike, luster, and all else good. The 1897-S is usually all of these, and adding one to your collection can be done on just about any budget. The entire situation of 1897-S is reminiscent of the memorable-quality, but inexpensive, S Mint coins of the early years of the series."
It must be remembered that Bowers' comments regarding all Morgan dollar issues are for those pieces typically encountered, coins in the middle Mint State grades for most issues like the 1897-S. His comments hardly apply to coins like the present MS68 piece that is tied with just one other example for the finest that PCGS has certified, with no similar examples appearing on the NGC Census Report.
An absolutely sumptuous silver dollar, this Superb Gem has wisps of champagne toning over highly lustrous and satiny silver surfaces. There is hardly a blemish to be seen on either side. Every design feature is sharply detailed, including the hair over Liberty's ear and the eagle's breast feathers. The present offering provides an amazing opportunity for the connoisseur who demands the highest possible quality.
