Description

1898-O $1 MS67 Prooflike NGC. In lower Mint State grades, the 1898-O is among the more plentiful dates in the entire Morgan dollar series. The release of countless examples by the Treasury Department in the 1960s included numerous Prooflike coins. Unfortunately, most of these were abraded enough to grade no finer MS65. Today, the Prooflike 1898-O Morgan is rare as a Superb Gem. The pristine features on both sides of this coin include a silky-smooth cheek on Liberty's portrait. The strike is razor-sharp throughout, and the otherwise untoned surfaces reveal whispers of faint golden color at the borders. The essence of condition rarity in a Morgan dollar. Census: 5 in 67 Prooflike, 0 finer (1/18).
Ex: FUN Signature (Heritage, 1/2003), lot 8188.
