Description
The Finest PCGS Certified 1899-O Morgan Dollar, MS68
1899-O $1 MS68 PCGS. Ex: Jack Lee 1/Jack Lee 2. The late Jack Lee had one of the best eyes for quality of anyone in the coin business. As both a collector and a dealer, he was always on the lookout for the best possible examples of all silver dollars, and the collections that he formed were nothing short of phenomenal. The present coin, the finest 1899-O Morgan dollar that PCGS has ever certified, is just one example of the quality that Jack loved so much. With a mintage of more than 12 million coins, the 1899-O is another extremely common date, although before the Treasury release it was considered a rarity. Striking quality varies from poor to exceptional, as Wayne Miller explains: "Strike varies considerably from very flat to fully struck. This is to be expected for a high-mintage issue, since New Orleans struck approximately 150,000 coins per working die. Those struck near the end of the life of the dies would of course suffer considerable loss of detail." Obviously struck early in the life of a new pair of working dies, this Superb Gem exhibits bold design motifs and frosty luster with fully brilliant silver surfaces. Hints of champagne toning are most obvious on the eagle's breast feathers. Both sides are pristine and virtually mark free. The Morgan dollar collector and connoisseur will not want to miss such an important opportunity to acquire the finest known 1899-O Morgan dollar.
