Elusive 1899-S Gem Deep Mirror Prooflike Dollar

1899-S $1 MS65 Deep Mirror Prooflike NGC. The 1899-S dollar, with a mintage of 2.562 million pieces, is a relatively plentiful issue in Mint State through the MS65 level. David Bowers, in his 1993 Silver Dollars & Trade Dollars of the United States, partially accounts for this: "A steady stream of Uncirculated 1899-S dollars ... was paid out by the San Francisco Mint during the period from 1942 through the mid-1950s."
Bowers goes on to say that Prooflike coins are abundant. Indeed, NGC and PCGS have graded approximately 300 Prooflike specimens. On the other hand, the two services have seen only about 85 Deep Mirror Prooflike examples, mostly through the near-Gem grade levels. A mere five Gem DMPLs have been seen, and four finer.
A sliver of electric-blue and russet patina clings to the rim areas of the present MS65 DMPL coin, and an attentive strike nicely defines the design features, including partial detail in the hair over Liberty's ear and on the breast feathers. A few minor grade-consistent marks are visible, more so on the reverse. Census: 3 in 65 Deep Mirror Prooflike, 0 finer (7/08).(Registry values: P5, N4719)
