1901 VAM-3 Morgan Dollar, MS62
Doubled Die Reverse
Tied for Finest Certified
Sole Finest With CAC

1901 $1 Doubled Die Reverse, VAM-3, MS62 PCGS. CAC. A Top 100 Variety and WOW! Morgan VAM. The 1901 "Shifted Eagle" Morgan dollar, with the reverse dramatically die doubled, is one of the top Want List coins in the entire series for advanced collectors. It is one of the so-called "naked eye" VAMs, readily distinguished even without magnification. The entirety of the central reverse design elements are doubled toward 12 o'clock due to a shift in the die-hub placement during the die's manufacture. VAMWorld.com states: "The variety has crossed over into the mainstream Morgan sets as a 'must have' and is listed in the Red Book."

The variety is relatively collectible in the absolute sense, but most known examples are in circulated grades, and many are impaired. Mint State coins are of the utmost rarity. In that light, the current coin is special just for having the MS designation on the holder. But let us also consider the fact that this is one of finest examples of the variety known. PCGS lists eight Mint State submissions, the finest of which are four MS62s and one MS62+; NGC, similarly, lists five Mint State pieces, the finest of which are two MS62. Likely, some duplication exists in the MS62 tallies from dealers trying to get coins upgraded.

The present coin, however, stands about as the sole finest VAM-3 1901 with CAC endorsement. Thus, many collectors would consider this piece the finest known, even though an MS62+ coin without CAC is reported. Vivid blue and violet toning paints the borders, leaving the interiors with rich golden toning. Vibrant luster prevails throughout the fields, and the overall strike sharpness is excellent, even on the central high points. Grade-limiting abrasions are light, such that this is one of the cleanest VAM-3 coins known.
