Description
1903 Morgan, MS65 Deep Prooflike
Tied for Finest Deep Prooflike Example
1903 $1 MS65 Deep Prooflike NGC. Q. David Bowers, in A
Guide Book of Morgan Dollars, fifth edition, observes:
"Prooflike [1903 dollars] are seen at widely scattered intervals
and do not have high contrast." In our experience, this statements
rings true in terms of coins seen at auction. This reality also
means that Deep Prooflike pieces are rare in any grade. NGC reports
just 23 such coins, and PCGS only four; the finest are graded MS65,
with NGC and PCGS combined reporting only six coins this fine
(6/23).The present example is Registry-quality for collectors assembling Deep Prooflike sets. Brilliant surfaces showcase satiny devices and mirrorlike fields, comprising the low-contrast form of eye appeal for which this issue is known. Detail is sharp, and no major abrasions are seen. Census: 4 in 65 Deep Prooflike, 0 finer (6/23).(Registry values: P2, N4719)
