Finest Certified 1904 Deep Mirror Prooflike Dollar, MS65
Ex: Jack Lee

1904 $1 MS65 Deep Mirror Prooflike PCGS. Jack Lee. As dollar collectors know, the 1904 is a challenging issue to locate in high grades. With prooflike fields it is exceptionally difficult. In his latest book on the series, Q. David Bowers notes, "Some prooflikes exist but are not of high contrast." That is not the case with this coin. The devices are notably differentiated from the deeply mirrored fields and present a strong cameo contrast. This is the only Gem Deep Mirror Prooflike example certified by either of the major services. The only other DMPL is a PCGS MS64. As such, it is not surprising to learn that the finest coin of this issue was in Jack Lee's collection. The centers of each side are mostly brilliant, while the margins are toned with gorgeous rainbow colors in an arc on the upper obverse and lower reverse with iridescent sections which come alive when examined in a light. There are a few small abrasions on each side, but certainly none that can be considered distracting. The most apparent flaw that can be used for pedigree purposes is a tiny, almost microscopic circular planchet flaw on Liberty's cheek. The surfaces overall are outstanding, as expected for the grade. The strike is also above average, bearing in mind this entire issue was struck from a C4 reverse die which has an inherent weakness on the eagle's breast feathers. This is a unique opportunity for the dollar collector who demands the ultimate grade.
