    Spectacular 1904 Morgan Silver Dollar
    Rare in Mint State, MS66

1904 $1 MS66 PCGS. Silver dollar production was suspended after 1904, with a supposedly final mintage of 2.8 million pieces. Of course, production was resumed in 1921, but that circumstance was not foreseen at the time. By 1910 the Mint was so certain that no more silver dollars would ever be wanted that they destroyed all the hubs and master dies still being stored at the Mint. Perhaps this feeling that the world was through with silver dollars led to lax quality control at the Mint. The silver dollars of 1904 are typically shallowly struck, with poor luster, and surface quality is indifferent.
The present coin is a marked exception to this rule. The surfaces display full cartwheel luster, and the fields are undisturbed. All devices are fully detailed, and one could not ask for more in terms of eye appeal. This offering is a splendid example of this tougher date. Population: 13 in 66, 0 finer (11/08).
