Conditionally Scarce Gem 1904-S Morgan Dollar
1904-S $1 MS65 PCGS. In his silver dollar Encyclopedia, published in 1993, Bowers estimated that only 200 to 400 hundred examples of this San Francisco Mint issue still survived in Gem condition or better. That estimate seems conservative almost fifteen years later, as a mere 146 coins have been certified at or above MS65, by NGC and PCGS combined (including possible resubmissions). This piece is intensely lustrous and boldly struck, with slight weakness on the central design elements and few surface marks. An area of charcoal-gray color is noted near the center of the obverse.
