Description

1904-S Morgan Dollar, MS66
Key Date, Especially in Mint State

1904-S $1 MS66 PCGS. Exquisite silver surfaces contain only hints of peripheral russet toning, and are covered by strong cartwheel luster. Striking weakness is only evident on the highest points of the design, and even then, is quite minor. The lack of troublesome abrasions complete the elements that comprise the simply stunning eye appeal afforded by this Morgan dollar.

The 1904-S is one of the key issues in the Morgan dollar series, particularly in Mint State. While the sizable mintage of 2,304,000 coins is far from the bottom of the heap in terms of production, many were paid out into circulation until the 1950s, and the few Mint State coins that made it into numismatic channels were enough for the issue's rarity in high grade to escape detection. None were found at the Mint during this era, and this issue was similarly absent from the GSA distributions as well as the Redfield Hoard. Gems comprise just a small percentage of this limited Uncirculated population, and the present offering is nearly unimprovable. PCGS Population: 25 in 66 (4 in 66+), 2 finer (2/26).(Registry values: P7, N7079)
