Description

1889-CC Morgan Dollar, MS62 CAC
Exceptional Key Date, VAM-2

1889-CC $1 MS62 PCGS. CAC. VAM-2. VAM-2 features a high 9 in the date, and a reverse die crack from U in UNITED, through star, to O in ONE. The VAM-2 variety was discovered in February of 1974 by Leonard Hinckley. For the popular Morgan dollar series, the 1889-CC is a key date from the coveted Carson City branch mint. From a modest mintage of 350,000, most survivors are in circulated grades, while Uncirculated specimens are scarce and in high demand. The 1881-CC and 1885-CC Morgan dollars have lower mintages, but they have both emerged in significant quantities from the GSA hoard in Mint State, which is not the case for the 1889-CC Morgan.

This exceptional example of the key Carson City branch mint issue has lovely silver-gray toning with peripheral iridescence of gold, russet, and rose hues for outstanding eye appeal. The strike is full, and frosty luster covers the surfaces. There are fewer contact marks than usually seen for the grade, and when combined with the beautiful natural toning, the CAC approval is well-justified.(Registry values: P9, N4719)
