Description

1880-O Dollar, A Rare Gem
Only One Coin Graded Finer

1880-O $1 MS65 PCGS. The 1880-O silver dollar was well represented in the Treasury releases of the early 1960s, but almost the entire Mint State population exhibits bagmarks and other abrasions to the detriment of numeric grade. The 1880-O is a rarity in MS65 and nearly unknown finer. Its reputation as a condition rarity is prominent among Morgan dollar collectors, and the elusiveness of Gems at auction supports the perception of this issue's conditional rarity.

This piece is remarkably clean even for the Gem grade level, showing only a few microscopic marks beneath a loupe. The eagle's breast and the hair above Liberty's ear exhibit uncommon sharpness for a New Orleans product, and both sides showcase brilliant, softly frosted mint luster. Population: 48 in 65 (4 in 65+), 1 finer (5/18).
Ex: Dallas Signature (Heritage, 10/2006), lot 1316, which realized $27,600.
