Description

1881-S Dollar, Radiant MS68+
Superb Morgan Series Type, CAC

1881-S $1 MS68+ PCGS. CAC. The 1881-S often comes nice, but rarely THIS nice. The San Francisco Mint obliged collectors with a streak of great-looking Morgan dollars that did not ebb until the mid-1880s, most of which never saw significant circulation. Many of the 1881-S dollars sat undisturbed in mint bags until the late 1960s and early 1970s, although some were lost to melting during the silver run-up of the late 1970s.

This is a nearly brilliant coin with a needle-sharp strike that radiates undisturbed mint bloom. A faint dusting of golden-tan toning ensures original surfaces, but does not diminish the vibrant silver luster that cartwheels across each side. Liberty's cheek is smooth and mark-free, while the fields are virtually devoid of contact. PCGS and NGC combined have certified well over 550,000 1881-S silver dollars, but fewer than three dozen examples meet or exceed the high technical and visual standards of this Plus-graded, CAC-endorsed coin. PCGS population: 21 in 68+, 2 finer. CAC: 108 in 68, 1 finer (2/20).(Registry values: P1, N1793)
